Vision

To reduce the scale and impact of dementia, we need to have an educational plan to the population and draw government attention to this problem.

Strategy

Maira is using a tablet based cognitive test to evaluate low education population in Brazil to try to identify cognitive impairment in the elderly. Her current research aims to develop screening tools for low education and vulnerable populations.

Impact

As an Atlantic Fellow, she has had the opportunity to be part of a Latin America network and work in a large scale to fight against dementia. Combined with the GBHI leadership skills, she feels like shes making a difference.

Motivation

Dementia is increasing in Brazil and the population is misdiagnosed. As a neuropsychologist Maira aims to help this population to be diagnosed and receive appropriate treatment.

Education & Experience

Maira Okada de Oliveira is a neuropsychologist with specific training and expertise in cognitive assessment. Maira received her master's degree in Science from Neurology Department from de University of Sao Paulo and currently she is a doctoral student at the same university. She has focused her studies on the evaluation and diagnosis of all forms of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease and frontotemporal dementia. She recently completed a fellowship with the Global Brain Health Institute in which she further developed her leadership and project management skills and forged new collaborations with dementia researchers across Latin America and around the world.
