Personal Hero

Dr Biraj man Karmacharya

Words of Strength

Hard-working, consistent, honest, empathetic

Vision

To reduce the scale and impact of dementia, Prabha believes we need to increase social awareness of risk factors of dementia; provide health education on its prevention, early diagnosis, and management; and improve social engagement of older adults through the social institutions.

Strategy

Prabha is training nursing students to do cognitive assessments, administering cognitive assessments of older adults, and conducting research on problems of older adults.

Impact

Prabha believes this fellowship is a platform that will help her to develop the skills and experience required to work in the real world, and the opportunity to interact with people and develop relationships.

Motivation

Prabha's motivation to work in the field of dementia stems from the growing older adult population in Nepal and the limited attention given to dementia research and care. Dementia is often perceived as a normal part of aging, resulting in low awareness among communities and limited recognition of its early signs. Nepal also lacks validated and culturally adapted cognitive assessment tools, making early identification and accurate assessment challenging. The limited evidence base on dementia further highlights the need for context-specific research. She hopes to contribute to improving awareness, strengthening early detection, and developing culturally appropriate approaches to dementia research and care in Nepal.

Education & Experience

Prabha is an Assistant Professor in Nursing and a Trainer in Geriatric Care and Kathmandu University School of Medical Science (Nepal). She completed a Bachelor's degree from Purbanchal University (Nepal), a Master of Arts in Sociology and a Proficiency Certificate Level in Nursing from Tribhuvan University (Nepal), and a Master’s in Adult Nursing from Mahidol University (Thailand).
