Current Work
Kamada is a physician-scientist, medical microbiologist, and university lecturer advancing dementia and Alzheimer’s disease research in Uganda. His work focuses on the microbial pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease, integrating community-based studies, cognitive assessment, biospecimen analysis, gut microbiome research, and biomarkers. He also contributes to teaching and student supervision, clinical leadership, and research capacity building.

Vision
Kamada envisions advancing brain health through prevention, early detection, equitable care, research, and policy, while empowering families, strengthening health systems, and addressing the social inequities that shape the impact of dementia.
Strategy
Kamada is building dementia research and care capacity in Uganda by integrating community-based cohorts, cognitive assessment, biospecimen collection, microbiome analysis, biomarker research, and training to strengthen prevention, early detection, and locally relevant care.
Impact
As an Atlantic Fellow, Kamada aims to build Uganda's dementia research, training, and policy capacity, translating community evidence into practical care models that improve brain health and support people living with dementia and their families.
Motivation
In Uganda, dementia remains underrecognized, with limited diagnostic capacity, specialist care, and public awareness. Kamada seeks to address these challenges by generating locally relevant evidence on Alzheimer’s disease and biomarkers while strengthening brain health research capacity.
Education & Experience
Kamada Lwere completed his medical training at Makerere University and received a Master of Public Health from the University of Malaya, a Master of Medicine in Medical Microbiology, and a PhD from Makerere University. He is a lecturer and physician-scientist in Uganda, with experience in medical microbiology, dementia research, cognitive assessment, gut microbiome analysis, and research capacity building.
