Vision
We can advance brain health and reduce the impact of dementia through early screening and prevention. Since dementia cannot be cured, prevention is our best shot.
Strategy
Khalil is developing a speech analysis AI model to support early detection of cognitive impairment in Arabic speaking older adults, using natural speech features to identify clinically meaningful patterns that may not be captured by routine assessment.
Impact
As an Atlantic Fellow, Khalil hopes to create a regional collaborative network on dementia and cognitive health, linking researchers, clinicians, and communities to advance locally relevant research, AI enabled early detection.
Motivation
In Lebanon and the wider region, dementia remains underdiagnosed and poorly integrated in routine health and social care. Khalil's work focuses on developing culturally adapted tools to support earlier detection and improve access to cognitive health care
Education & Experience
Khalil is an academic researcher in epidemiology and biostatistics at the American University of Beirut. He has graduate training in epidemiology, medical statistics, and clinical research. His work combines public health, psychiatry, dementia research, and AI driven methods, with a focus on improving cognitive health assessment in Arabic speaking populations.
