Stephen is a gerontologist and demographer specializing in population science. He is a senior lecturer in the Department of Population Studies at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda. His research focuses on dementia and ageing in Uganda.

Vision
Stephen envisions influencing policy and advancing advocacy to strengthen the prevention and management of dementia in low- and middle-income countries.

Stephen generates scientific evidence to inform policy and equip civil society organizations to advocate for dementia prevention and management.
Impact
As an Atlantic Fellow, Stephen aims to influence the development of new health policies in his home country, Uganda, that will improve health care and long-term care for people living with dementia
Motivation
Stephen seeks to bridge gaps in brain health literacy in Uganda and globally by bringing together science and policy dialogue to increase awareness of brain health, dementia, and its risk factors.
Education & Experience
Stephen completed training in gerontology at the University of Stirling in the UK and has conducted research on dementia and ageing in sub-Saharan Africa. His work includes a scoping review of cognitive stimulation therapy among older adults with dementia and a study of the prevalence and risk factors for dementia among older adults in rural eastern Uganda.
He is a senior lecturer in the Department of Population Studies at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda. He served as a member of the Technical Advisory Group for the WHO UN Decade of Healthy Ageing from 2022 to 2025 and the WHO Ethics and Research Committee from 2022 to 2024.
