Mapping Brain Health Inequalities: Brazilian Area Deprivation Index

Understanding How Neighborhoods Impact Brain Health
Latin America & Caribbean

Overview

Where you live affects your health. In Brazil, economic disparities contribute to differences in brain health, but there is no nationwide tool to measure these inequalities. This project will develop the Brazilian Area Deprivation Index (BrADI) to map brain health risks across the country.

Project Details

This study will create a new index to assess how socioeconomic conditions impact brain health in Brazil. Using data from the 2022 Census, we will identify 21 key socioeconomic indicators to calculate the Brazilian Area Deprivation Index (BrADI). The index will categorize neighborhoods into five levels, from least to most disadvantaged. We will then link BrADI data with cognitive health assessments from the Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil), which includes 15,000 participants, to explore how neighborhood disadvantage correlates with cognitive function. The findings will provide evidence for policymakers to develop targeted interventions aimed at reducing health disparities in dementia care. By identifying at-risk communities, this project will help inform public health strategies and support future research on dementia prevention and treatment in Brazil.
