Interests
Neuroscientist
We must prioritize developing early diagnostic platforms that are affordable, accessible, robust, and culturally sensitive.
Current Work
David leads pioneering research in Ghana on early dementia and Alzheimer's disease. He is building Africa's first dementia biobank, studying brain activity with fNIRS, and mapping genes to develop culturally appropriate biomarker tools by 2030.

Vision
For effective dementia care, he believes we must prioritize developing early diagnostic platforms that are affordable, accessible, robust, and culturally sensitive.
Strategy
Currently optimizing protocols for tau & beta-amyloid quantification in saliva/blood. Also, exploring fNIRS feasibility & acceptability as a dementia diagnostic platform for less privileged communities.
Impact
Through this fellowship, David aims to acquire advanced skills in designing culturally sensitive dementia diagnostic platforms, specifically focusing on blood-based markers, and fNIRS data generation and analysis.
Motivation
In Ghana, dementia diagnosis is significantly hampered by high costs, limited access to services, culturally biased assessment tools, the invasive nature of lumbar punctures, and consistently late detection.
Education & Experience
David Larbi holds a Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science from the University of Cape Coast, Ghana, Master of Philosophy in Pathology from the University of Ghana, and a Doctorate in Neuroscience from the University of Leipzig, Germany. Following his doctoral studies, he joined the Department of Medical Laboratory Science as a Lecturer and Researcher, specializing in neuropathology and neurodiagnostics
