Vision

Hector believes we must educate about neurocognitive disorders and train healthcare professionals to conduct timely screenings, identifying early cases of cognitive impairment to provide early care and improve mental health outcomes for the population.

Strategy

In Guatemala, there is a knowledge gap regarding neurocognitive disorders. Hector currently gives talks across departments for doctors and psychologists about dementia and teaches them to use the MOCA to detect early cognitive impairments.

Impact

As an Atlantic Fellow, Hector looks forward to getting the tools to transmit the knowledge to his colleagues and be able to teach Mayan traditional healers about dementia and break down all the stigma. This will reach Mayan populations & reduce dementia impact.

Motivation

We have many ethnic groups w/different languages which generates a gap in providing timely brain health, stigma and discrimination. Hector aims to create a neuropsychiatric center at the Hospital Regional, translate tests and teach to build this bridge.

Education & Experience

Hector completed my medical school training at Universidad Rafael Landivar. He received a master´s degree in Psychiatry from the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala. After this, he became chief of Psychiatry at the Hospital Regional de Huehuetenango.
