Vision
Maria beleives that we can advance brain health and reduce the impact of dementia by promoting early diagnosis, inclusive care, and community education, because staying informed is the most powerful way to take charge and make meaningful change.
Strategy
Maria is leading Namibia's first neurophysiology department and establishing NeuroSync Diagnostic Centre, combining neurodiagnostic testing with public awareness and research to promote brain health equity and improve early diagnosis and care.
Impact
As an Atlantic Fellow, Maria aims to champion brain health equity in Namibia by building research-informed awareness programs and policies that improve early diagnosis, care, and support for people affected by dementia and other neurological disorders.
Motivation
In Namibia, research in brain health, especially dementia, is nearly non-existent. Maria is dedicated to changing this by decentralizing neurological care and promoting awareness to improve understanding, detection, and support for those affected.
Education & Experience
Maria completed her Clinical Neurophysiology degree at Tshwane University of Technology and her residency at Steve Biko Academic Hospital in South Africa, becoming Namibia's first and only Neurophysiologist. She established the country's first neurophysiology department and is the founder of NeuroSync Diagnostic Centre; a pioneering initiative offering a holistic approach to brain health through mobile clinics serving rural Namibia, a research hub, and advocacy for brain health and equity. Maria is pursuing a PGDip in Surgical Neurophysiology with Global Innervation LLC and a PGDip in Public Health at the University of Pretoria. Her work focuses on bridging the gap in brain health access, research, and awareness across underserved communities in Namibia.
