Interests
Biologist
Promoting brain health and reducing the impact of dementia requires not only a transdisciplinary approach, but also deep empathy, compassion, and the conviction that coherent strategies can be implemented to address modifiable risk factors.
Current Work
Maria is an Assistant Professor at the Human Genetics Institute, Pontificia Universidad Javeriana. Her work focuses on psychiatric genetics and the epigenetics of complex neuropsychiatric disorders, and she is interested in exploring the therapeutic potential of classic psychedelics.

Vision
She believes that promoting brain health and reducing the impact of dementia requires not only a transdisciplinary approach, but also deep empathy, compassion, and the conviction that coherent strategies can be implemented to address modifiable risk factors.
Strategy
María aims to contribute to research on the genetic architecture of dementias in Latin American populations and to explore the epigenetic impact of wellness-oriented strategies and brain health promotion.
Impact
As an Atlantic Fellow, María aims to develop translational research strategies that bridge knowledge of genetic and epigenetic factors associated with dementias with approaches for prevention, diagnosis, and care.
Motivation
By exploring how well-being practices can influence epigenetic markers linked to brain health, Maria aims to connect biology and prevention to promote brain health equity in Latin America.
Education & Experience
María Velásquez completed her undergraduate studies in Biology at the Universidad de Caldas and received her master's and PhD in Biological Sciences from Universidad de los Andes. After completing her PhD, she joined the Human Genetics Institute at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana as an Assistant Professor.
