To reduce the scale and impact of cognitive impairment, we need to transmit the importance of cognitive therapies, make them available to the whole population, and mostly, prove that they help to improve people's quality of life.

Current Work

Neurologist specialized in cerebrovascular diseases and cognitive decline, especially vascular cognitive decline. Raquel is also a post-doctoral researcher with her main interest being in neurorehabilitation and brain repair, and plasticity mechanisms. In addition, Raquel is a classical pianist.

Strategy

Raquel is evaluating and treating patients with cognitive decline associated with stroke and studying better ways to help them.

Impact

As an Atlantic Fellow for Equity in Brain Health, Raquel hopes to learn the best strategies to demonstrate the benefits of cognitive therapy and then, make cognitive therapy broadly available to all of her patients.

Motivation

People with cognitive decline often struggle to find places where they can learn how to improve their cognitive capacities.

Education & Experience

Raquel Gutiérrez Zúñiga received her Medical Degree from the Universidad de Granada. Subsequently, she joined her residency program in Neurology from University Hospital Virgen de las Nieves in Granada. After residency completion, she worked as a Neurologist in La Paz University Hospital in Madrid. There, she obtained her Ph.D. focused on Cerebrovascular Diseases. As part of the formation during the Ph.D., she did a research stay at Gordon Center for Medical Imaging at Harvard University, learning about cerebral connectivity and applying it to vascular cognitive decline.
