Overview
Dementia is a growing health challenge in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In Kenya, the need for evidence-based solutions to improve dementia care is crucial.
Project Details
This project aims to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and impact of a post-diagnosis education intervention for adults newly diagnosed with dementia and their caregivers at the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi. Leveraging ongoing initiatives at the Brain and Mind Institute to improve early detection of dementia, this study will address the gap in post-diagnosis care services at the Aga Khan University Hospital. The project will develop and integrate a 90-minute post-diagnosis education service, delivering information to patients and their families to support advance care planning and to manage disease progression.
The study has three specific aims:
- Develop and integrate a time-efficient post-diagnosis education service;
- Test the feasibility and acceptability of this service;
- Evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention in improving dementia literacy, reducing stigma, and enhancing caregiver confidence to manage dementia symptoms.
The intervention’s impact will be measured through surveys assessing knowledge on dementia, and confidence to manage dementia symptoms. Being the first of its kind in Kenya, the project will set a precedent for dementia care in clinical settings across East Africa.
