Mentorship

Overview

Mentorship is a key component of the Atlantic Fellows for Equity in Brain Health program and has two important aspects. Atlantic Fellows have dedicated mentors within GBHI and from their home community:

GBHI Mentors

GBHI faculty serve as program mentors, using techniques of reflection, experiential learning, and role modeling to provide guidance, encouragement, inspiration, and critical feedback to support career goals. Their role is to help the fellow take full advantage of the opportunities in the program, to support the fellow through the application for their Pilot Project Pilot Application, and ideally help them identify and work towards their medium and long term goals.

Regional Mentors

The second aspect is the involvement of a Regional Mentor who is also a part of the mentorship structure. Regional Mentors are generally senior leaders from the fellow’s own region or discipline that can provide high-level support and guidance, both in terms of the fellowship and the pilot application, but also in terms of long-term career goals when the fellows are returning to their home country or region.

Other Mentors and Sources of Guidance

Through the wider network of the GBHI Community (Faculty, Staff, Life Long Atlantic Fellows, and others) fellows can formally and informally access a wide range of expertise and insight. Fellows may also decide to formally involve other subject matter experts (“content mentors”) as part of the overall mentorship team. These other experts help support the fellows with particular areas of expertise, skills or context.

My Action Plan

An important tool used by mentorship in the early months is the “My Action Plan (MAP)” template which fellows complete with input from their mentor. This document helps fellows consider what they want to achieve from the program, and what areas and opportunities within the program they should focus on.
