Current Work

Paul combines research and the practice of arts and therapy. He employs various art forms to achieve therapeutic outcomes for mental health, providing an alternative to existing mental health treatment modalities in Cameroon.

Vision

He believes that brain health can be advanced through sensitization and awareness initiatives, as many people are still unaware of its importance. He emphasizes that collective efforts to eliminate stigma against dementia patients are essential.

Strategy

He is engaged in a participatory community-based approach to brain health sensitization, ensuring that community members learn about brain health and are encouraged to accept dementia patients as normal human beings.

Impact

Paul hopes to acquire more knowledge and experience on brain health and dementia, including various intervention modalities that can be applied in grassroots settings.

Motivation

Dementia is underated in Cameroon. Even among those who are aware of its existence, many lack the financial means to access care in conventional hospitals. Paul stresses the need for alternative methods for its early diagnosis, treatment and management.

Education & Experience

Paul N. Animbom holds a Ph.D. in Information and Communication Sciences from Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium, specializing in health communication. He also completed a Joint European Master's in Performing Arts from the Universities of Paris 8 and Brussels. He is a Professor of Mental Health, Therapeutic, Digital and Audiovisual Communication, Media, and Theatre Studies and Chair of the Department of Performing and Visual Arts at The University of Bamenda, Cameroon. He is a mental health advocate, arts in health promoter and practitioner, and author of more than 40 scientific publications in national and international peer-reviewed journals and handbooks. His research interests include health communication, media, television and film studies, therapeutic theatre, mental health, and dementia. He has practical experience in art-related therapy and has received training on the Neuro Dramatic Play programme. He is the Founder and President of the Centre for Research and Practice of Art-related Therapy, Cameroon.
